SHARON TALKS ABOUT CO-STARS IN ëMAGKAPATIDí
by Crispina Martinez-Belen, The Manila Bulletin, June 6, 2002

It will be for the first time that Sharon Cuneta is having a film entry to a film festival and if only for this, she is most excited about her latest movie “Magkapatid” under Viva Films. What makes the movie extra memorable for her is her co-star, Judy Ann Santos, dubbed the reigning “Drama Princess,” with whom she is working for the first time.

Sharon and Juday play sisters in the movie megged by multi-awarded Joel Lamangan from a story by Mel del Rosario. Sharon is the elder sister who is a doctor. “Ako ang ate kaya mahal na mahal ko ang nakababatang kapatid ko. Maayos ang buhay ko pero si Juday hindi. She got married early and her husband has no job kaya ako ang takbuhan niya kapag may kailangan siya, kasi nga maayos ang buhay ko,” Sharon said.

But a tragic incident happened that shattered their beautiful sister-relationship. “Sa isang swimming session, ipinagbilin ko sa kanya ang anak ko. She said I don’t have to worry, she will take care of my son. But my son dies and I blamed her for that. Siya rin naman namatayan ng anak, pero dahil marami nga siyang anak, it wasn’t as painful a tragedy as mine. Soon, inaway ko na siya kahit na mahal ko siya. Kaaway ko na ang lahat ng tao until one day even my husband left me. Para bang nawala ang lahat sa akin.”

Her character, Sharon stressed is not bad. “Masyado lang siyang nasaktan noong mamatay ang anak niya. Kaya naging ganun siya.”

Her role in “Magkapatid,” Sharon added, is something very different from the roles she has played in the past. Her previous roles were mostly characters na tahimik. But in “Magkapatid,” “medyo hysterical ako ng kaunti. Anyway, maganda naman ‘yong change and I think the fans will like it.”

This early many are saying that both Sharon and Juday’s roles are pang-award. But Sharon said that when she accepts a role, she does not think of awards. “Iyong awards, bonus na lang yon. Basta ako, I always do my best because I want the audience to be satisfied. I want my movies to make money. Iyon naman ang importante sa ngayon para sa industriya. We need movies that will make money.”

She said she feels happy everytime she hears about a certain Filipino movie making money.

She hastened to add: “I admit that masaya ako kung may awards, but choosing between an award and box-office, sa takilya na lang ako. Palagay ko iyon ang mas dapat nating isipin ngayon.”

Sharon is also happy that she’s working once more with the multi–awarded actor Christopher de Leon. Asked to comment on her leading man, Sharon said “kamukha pa rin siya ni Nico (the role played by Christopher in ‘Bituing Walang Ningning’), hindi siya nagbago ng hitsura. Nakakainis nga eh. He still looks so young. Ilang taon na rin iyon pero ganoon pa rin ang hitsura niya.”

Sharon added that she and Boyet are so comfortable with each other. “We have made eight movies together, bale siyam na pati ‘yong guest role niya noon in ‘Bukas Luluhod ang mga Tala.’ Pero hindi kami naging close agad, kasi suplado yan eh,” she said in jest. “Sa dami ng nagawa naming pelikula, kami yata talaga ang love-team.”

About Juday, Sharon said: “Even in the past, I don’t get close at once to the stars I work with. It’s usually with the writers and directors that I get close to. Pero nang makasama ko iyang si Juday, ang bilis naming naging close. Naging close kami without effort. Kasi nakita ko agad na totoong tao siya.”

They have many things in common, Sharon said. “Basta break ng shooting, you see her reading a cookbook, planning what to cook next (Juday owns the Kilimanjaro restaurant along Timog in Quezon City). Lagi rin iyang may baong pencil case because she loves to write, sabi ko nga we have many things in common talaga. At saka, ang mata niya ang ganda-ganda. Sabi ko nga sa kanya, mukhang ipinanganak siyang ang mata niya ay pangartista lang.”

Sharon and Juday have known each other for quite sometime. Juday would visit her friend director Joyce Bernal on the set of a Sharon–Robin Padilla movie. “Then when we worked together, I came to know her even more, especially how she loves her mom (Carol). Eh ako pa naman talagang gusto ko ang mga tao who love their parents.”

Sharon has always been known to love her parents (former Pasay City Mayor Pablo Cuneta and the former Elaine Gamboa) with who she was really very close. Now that her father (who was mayor for half a century) is gone, Sharon takes very good care of her mom, especially after Elaine underwent a kneecap operation.

As an actress, Sharon said Juday is very good. “You can see how she handles her roles. She has a lot of work pero mabilis niyang makuha ang role niya. I think Judy Ann Santos is the superstar who is good at anything she does.”
