A new coffeetable book on exceptional women in the Philippines is now being readied for publication by April this year. The subjects are women who have made an impact in their work and profession, and contributed significantly to national development while defining women's role in the nineties and well into the next decade. Entitled "100 Women of the Philippines," the book is an interestingly written, beautifully photographed and tastefully designed compendium of women in different fields - from the august halls of academe and power boardrooms of corporations to the creative and exciting world of arts and entrepreneurship and the arena of politics and public service. These women include high-profile political personalities like former president Cory Aquino, Vice-President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, and Senator Loren Legarda; successful businesswomen and professionals like Elena Lim, Josie Natori, Socorro Ramos, and Virgie Ramos; less known personalities but achievers in their own right like Ligaya Cabal, Pearl Cericos, and Diana Santos; and well-known entertainment celebrities like Lea Salonga, Regine Velasquez, Vilma Santos, Nora Aunor and Sharon Cuneta. The profiles of these women are written by some of the country's best-known writers and journalists, among them Thelma San Juan, Bayani San Diego Jr., Ricky Lo, Anjie Ureta, Ester Dipasupil, Angelina Goloy and Eric Ramos. These women are captured in black-and-white photographs by a talented pool of photographers led by Jun de Leon, Raymund Isaac, Bobot Meru, Bernard Testa, Joan Bondoc and Henry Ferrer. Overall editorial supervision of "100 Women of the Philippines" is provided by Abe Florendo, author and journalist, of late the Lifestyle editor of Today, who says that the book "will be the first publication to give recognition to Filipino women who have been chosen for no other consideration than their eminent achievements in their fields and their being outstanding role models for the next generation of women. The book, Florendo adds, is "not a mere listing of Who's Who in contemporary Philippine society, but a significant indication of the direction of Filipino women in the future, in the next millennium." Publisher is Joy Buensalido, president of Buensalido & Associates public relations agency, who has worked with various women's projects in her career, and who has always dreamed of publishing "a coffeetable book that is different in substance and intent." Ms. Buensalido elaborates: "The book, we strongly hope, will be the first of a series of 100 women who are making a mark in their fields." A special section of the book will also be devoted to listing names of young women under 35 who will most likely be the next 100 women in the new millenium, Art design is ably provided by art director Raul Jorolan, director and managing partner of production house Scene Stealers Production, and chairman of Print Logic printing company. The book is accepting a limited number of corporate sponsors who may want to participate in the book by way of promoting their women-oriented projects or products. Expected to draw the interest of a wide audience abroad, "100 Women of the Philippines" will also be marketed abroad through an international distribution network, and will be made available through major local bookstores. Advance reservations for the book are now being handled by Buensalido & Associates at its office at MI-A&B The Gallery Building Amorsolo Street, Legaspi Village, Makati City, with telephone numbers (632) 812-3325, (632) 843-6565, and (632) 817-4471, They can also be reached through email at joybuen@info.com.ph
